DOES IT EARN ITS PLACE?
Before you keep, replace or buy — take a closer look at what your clothes are actually doing for you.
THE QUESTION ISN’T “DO I LIKE IT?”
A wardrobe can contain plenty of clothes you like.
But liking something isn’t always enough to make it useful.
Some pieces look beautiful on the hanger but rarely get worn. Others may not seem particularly special, yet somehow become the things you reach for again and again.
The difference is often found in the details.
How it feels.
How it fits.
How often you wear it.
How easily it works with the rest of your wardrobe.
And whether it suits the life you actually live.
That’s what makes a piece earn its place.
01 DO YOU ACTUALLY WEAR IT?
A simple question — but a revealing one.
Think about the last few times you wore the piece.
Did you choose it without thinking?
Do you find yourself reaching for it again and again?
Or has it spent most of its life waiting patiently in the wardrobe?
A piece doesn’t have to be worn every week to earn its place. Special-occasion clothes have a purpose too.
The question is whether you have a reason to keep it.
Ask yourself:
When did I last wear it?
What occasions do I wear it for?
Would I miss it if it disappeared tomorrow?
02 DOES IT FEEL GOOD ON YOU?
Looking good matters.
But so does feeling good.
The clothes you reach for most often usually have something in common: your body is comfortable in them.
Perhaps the fabric feels wonderful against your skin.
Perhaps nothing pulls, digs in or needs constant adjusting.
Perhaps you simply forget you’re wearing it.
That matters.
If you don’t enjoy wearing something, you’re unlikely to build outfits around it — no matter how lovely it looks.
Ask yourself:
Do I feel comfortable in it?
Do I like the fabric against my skin?
Can I move easily?
Am I constantly adjusting it?
03 DOES IT WORK WITH YOUR BODY?
A garment can be beautiful and still not be right for you.
The shape, proportions, neckline, length, fabric and details all affect how a piece behaves on your body.
Pay attention to what happens when you put it on.
Does it sit where you want it to?
Does it give you the shape and ease you like?
Does it make you feel comfortable and confident?
You don’t need to force yourself to love a garment simply because it was expensive, fashionable or looked wonderful on someone else.
Your wardrobe should work with your body — not ask your body to work around it.
04 DOES IT WORK WITH WHAT YOU ALREADY OWN?
This is where a wardrobe starts to become useful.
Take one piece and look at what you already own.
How many things can you wear it with?
Can you create several different outfits from it?
Does it work across different parts of your life?
A piece doesn’t need to go with everything.
But if it only works with one particular item, it may not be doing as much work as you think.
The more naturally a piece connects with the rest of your wardrobe, the more useful it becomes.
Try this:
Choose one garment.
Now find three different ways you could wear it.
If that feels easy, you’re onto something.
05 DOES IT SUIT YOUR REAL LIFE?
Your wardrobe needs to belong to the life you’re actually living.
Not the life you imagine you might live one day.
Not the occasion you haven’t had in three years.
And not the version of yourself you thought you were supposed to become.
Think about your ordinary days.
Where do you go?
What do you do?
What do you need your clothes to allow you to do?
The right clothes make your life easier.
They move with you, suit your surroundings and make getting dressed feel straightforward.
A beautiful garment that never fits into your real life may not be earning its place.
06 WOULD YOU BUY IT AGAIN?
This might be the most revealing question of all.
Imagine you didn’t already own it.
You see it in a shop today.
Would you choose it?
Would you pay the price?
Would you take it home?
If the answer is no, ask yourself why.
Perhaps your style has changed.
Perhaps your body has changed.
Perhaps your life has changed.
Or perhaps you’ve simply discovered that it was never quite right for you.
That’s useful information.
It doesn’t mean you made a mistake.
It means you’ve learned something about what works for you now.
07 THE VERDICT
You don’t need to make every wardrobe decision today.
Instead, put each piece into one of three simple groups:
KEEP
It works. I wear it. I feel good in it.
These are the pieces earning their place.
REVIEW
Something isn’t quite right.
Perhaps it needs altering, styling differently or pairing with something else.
Give it a little attention before making a decision.
LET GO
It no longer works for me.
It doesn’t fit my body, my life, my style or the way I want to feel.
And that’s okay.
Making space for what works is part of building a wardrobe that feels like yours.
A WARDROBE SHOULD EARN YOUR TRUST
You don’t need a wardrobe full of clothes.
You need clothes you can rely on.
Pieces that feel good.
Pieces that work together.
Pieces that suit your life.
Pieces that make getting dressed easier rather than harder.
And pieces that make you feel like yourself.
That’s what it means for a garment to earn its place.
