SHOPPING WITH INTENTION

BUY LESS. CHOOSE BETTER. WEAR MORE.

Shopping well isn’t about buying more. It’s about recognising what deserves a place in your wardrobe - and what doesn’t.

Make each garment earn its place in your wardrobe.

Before you buy anything, pause.

Shopping with intention isn’t about buying less for the sake of it. It’s about becoming more selective about what comes into your wardrobe.

A beautiful garment can still be the wrong garment — wrong colour, wrong fabric, wrong proportion, wrong lifestyle, or simply something you don’t really need.

The aim is to recognise the difference.

SHOP WITH INTENTION

A good purchase isn’t the one you love in the fitting room.

It’s the one you still love when you’re getting dressed six months later.

STAGE 1— IS IT RIGHT FOR ME?

Before you try something on, take a moment to consider whether it’s right for you.

Does the colour appeal to you, and do you like the style?

Does the fabric feel right for you?

Can you imagine wearing it in your everyday life?

Think about your wardrobe, too.

Will it work with things you already own, or would it mean buying several more pieces to go with it?

You don’t need to analyse every detail. Just look for the things that matter most to you.

If a garment catches your eye and seems to tick the important boxes, it’s worth trying on.

The first step isn’t finding the perfect garment. It’s recognising one that’s worth a closer look.

STAGE TWO — TRY IT ON

A garment can look lovely on the hanger and disappoint when you try it on. Sometimes, it’s the other way around.

The real test is how it looks and feels on you.

Does it fit comfortably and do the shape and proportions work for your body?

Look at how it falls from the front and the back.

Does it skim where you want it to, without pulling, clinging or adding unwanted bulk?

Move around in it. Sit down, lift your arms.

Does it stay comfortable?

And don’t forget to look at the overall effect.

Do you like what you see?

Can you imagine reaching for this garment regularly?

You don’t need to scrutinise every detail. Simply pay attention to how the garment looks, feels, and moves with you.

If it feels right and you like what you see, it’s worth considering.

STAGE THREE — IS IT WORTH BUYING?

You’ve found something you like, and it looks good on you. Now take a moment to consider whether it’s worth your money.

Start with the fabric.

Does it feel pleasant against your skin?

Does it have the weight and drape you want?

Will it suit the climate and the way you intend to wear it?

Check the care label too.

Will the garment need special attention, and are you happy to give it?

A garment that requires more care than you’re prepared to manage may not be the right choice for you.

Now check the construction.

Look at the seams, hems, buttons and fastenings.

Are they secure and reasonably well finished?

Does anything look weak or likely to fail?

Not every garment needs to be beautifully made, and a higher price doesn’t always mean better quality. Look for construction that’s reasonable for the price and the use you expect to get from it.

Finally, ask yourself:

Is it worth the money, and will I wear it often enough to make it worthwhile?

You don’t need to examine every stitch or expect perfection. Just look for anything that might turn a promising purchase into a disappointment.

Shopping with intention isn’t about finding the perfect garment. It’s about making the best choice you reasonably can.

THE SWBD SHOPPING CHECK

Before you buy, ask yourself…

1. DO I LIKE IT?

Does the colour and style appeal to me, and can I see myself wearing it?

2. DOES IT WORK FOR ME?

Does it suit my body, feel comfortable and work with my existing wardrobe?

3. IS IT WORTH IT?

Is the quality reasonable for the price, and am I happy with the care it requires?

4. WILL I WEAR IT?

Can I imagine reaching for it regularly, long after the excitement of buying it has passed?

A good purchase doesn’t have to be perfect. It simply has to be right for you.
