DOES YOUR HAIR COLOUR CHANGE YOUR JEWELLERY
You might be surprised what a
little change in colour can do.
Have you ever put on a favourite pair of earrings and thought, Hmm… something doesn’t look quite right?
I had that experience when my hair turned silver. I’d always loved yellow gold, but suddenly I found myself reaching for different pieces.
It wasn’t that gold was suddenly off the cards. It was simply that my colouring had changed, and some things seemed to work better than others.
So, should we all rush out and replace our jewellery when our hair changes colour whatever that colour will be? Absolutely not!
There are some lovely ways to bring your old favourites and new discoveries together. Silver, gold, pearls, gemstones and even the finish of a piece can all make a difference.
Let’s have a look at what works, what might surprise you, and how to wear the jewellery you love with confidence.
First, let’s talk about metals.
Gold
Silver
Mix them
Gold or silver? It’s a question that often comes up when our hair colour changes.
Silver hair can make cool-toned metals look particularly lovely, but don’t assume that yellow gold is suddenly off the menu. Far from it!
Warm gold can bring a lovely softness to silver or white hair, while rose gold offers something a little more subtle. And if you’ve always loved gold, there’s no reason to abandon it.
Think about how the metal looks against your skin, rather than making the decision based on your hair alone.
And don’t forget mixed metals. Combining gold and silver can look wonderfully modern, especially when the pieces have different textures and shapes.
A little experiment: Try on a favourite gold piece, then a silver one. Look at each in natural daylight. Which one makes your face come alive? You might surprise yourself.
Pearls have a rather special place in a woman’s jewellery collection. They’re timeless, but that doesn’t mean they have to be traditional.
Cream, ivory, white, champagne and even softly coloured pearls can all bring something different to an outfit.
And what about gemstones?
Aquamarine, amethyst, turquoise, garnet, sapphire and rose quartz offer a wonderful palette of colours. Some add a gentle touch, while others provide a little drama.
Your hair colour can influence how these colours appear beside your face, but your complexion, eye colour and personal preferences matter too.
Don’t be afraid of colour. Sometimes a beautiful gemstone is exactly what an otherwise simple outfit needs.
A little experiment: Hold a few different coloured stones near your face. Notice which colours brighten your complexion and which ones seem to disappear.
Pearls & Gemstones
It’s the little details that make the difference.
Jewellery Finishes
We tend to think about whether we prefer gold or silver, but there’s another detail worth considering: the finish.
A highly polished piece reflects light and can make quite a statement. Brushed or satin finishes have a softer, more understated appearance, while hammered and textured surfaces add interest without relying on shine.
None is better than another. It’s simply a matter of what appeals to you and how you like to wear your jewellery.
You can also combine finishes. A polished ring alongside a brushed bangle, for example, can create an interesting combination without looking too carefully coordinated.
A little experiment: Take two pieces in the same metal but with different finishes. Try them separately and together. You may find the contrast is what makes them interesting.
So, do you need to change your jewellery?
Not at all!
Changing hair colour can give us a fresh perspective on the jewellery we wear, and sometimes it’s fun to try something different.
But there’s no need to replace a favourite necklace or retire a pair of earrings simply because your hair has changed.
Perhaps you’ll discover that silver suits you beautifully. Perhaps you’ll fall in love with coloured gemstones, rediscover pearls or start mixing your metals.
The important thing is to enjoy the process.
After all, jewellery should be a little expression of who we are, not another set of rules to follow.
Wear what you love. Wear it with confidence. And don’t save your favourite pieces for a special occasion.
A little jewellery refresh.
Three practical suggestions:
Revisit the jewellery you already own.
Experiment with different metals, colours and finishes.
Wear something you haven't worn in ages.
